Phylum Press Postcards

The Postcard is a Public Work of Art
—Simon Cutts [“Postcard”], 1996

The poetry broadside, be it a poster or postcard, is a relative not only of the visual arts of painting, printmaking, and in some cases collage, but also of the handbill, poster, and leaflet; it serves as a public broadcast of the text it carries. Because they are intended to be read in a public context, and not in the intimate and private way one often reads bound pages, broadsides create an immediate community of readers sharing a common text.

In this spirit, Phylum Press publishes an occasion series of postcards, each bearing the text of a single short poem. Passed hand to hand or through the mail, the production of limited edition postcards have allowed us to distribute the work of writers we admire to readers who might not otherwise encounter it.
